Committed to a Cause Cookies for Kids’ Cancer™ is dedicated to raising funds to support research for new and improved therapies for pediatric cancer. Through the concept of local bake sales, Cookies for Kids’ Cancer™ provides the inspiration and support for individuals, communities and businesses to help fight pediatric cancer.
The Beginning Cookies for Kids’ Cancer™ was started by Liam Witt’s parents as a passionate idea for a larger-than-life bake sale to raise money for pediatric cancer research. Since the day of Liam’s diagnosis on February 26, 2007, the Witts have pledged together to make it a priority to contribute to the development of new and better treatments for children. During the 2007 holiday season, the Witts, with the help of more than 250 volunteers, sold 96,000 cookies in three weeks. The event raised more than $400,000 and captured the hearts – and tastebuds – of people nationwide. As emails and letters asking "what can we do to help?" poured in, it became clear that once people knew about the need, they wanted to get involved in the fight against pediatric cancer.
Taste of Success Cookies for Kids’ Cancer™ is a powerful model to fight all pediatric cancers. Like all bake sales, a Cookies for Kids’ Cancer™ bake sale starts as a way to collect a simple donation in exchange for a cookie or other baked good. Through the concept of holding a bake sale under the banner of Cookies for Kids’ Cancer™, individuals, schools, churches, synagogues, clubs and businesses have the ability to raise thousands of dollars and directly support research at major pediatric cancer centers across the country.
Tough Cookie Cookies for Kids’ Cancer™ is not about one child or one type of pediatric cancer. It is about improving the survival rates for all pediatric cancers. Below are some important statistics to know:
- Pediatric cancer is the leading cause of death by disease for children under the age of 18, but research for the disease has been historically under-funded 1
- Approximately half of the drugs used to treat children with cancer are at least 20 years old 2
- The treatments most children receive today were created for adults and have not been proven truly safe for children3
- If children survive the initial treatments, they are often left with other life threatening conditions from the aggressive treatments intended to save them4
